So this was supposed to be my second time to run the Dallas Marathon but the first one was iced out and forced me to go south to run the BCS Marathon in College Station in 2013. So this is now my first official time to run the Dallas Marathon.
First let's start with the thing that got my irk up. I had to pay $15 to park for packet pickup. Oh I tried to stay in there for a long time to get my money's worth but in the end I basically paid $15 for one hour of parking. There just wasn't much at the expo worth hanging around for sadly. And here I thought cities like Chicago and Boston were expensive. But enough with the bad. I hated it but I have moved on or at least now I will be moving on from it.
Race Day comes early like 3:50AM early. I got up and started to move around and finally after eating and changing I head over to the hotel to meet with the Luke's Lockers runners. Once it started to get closer to the time to leave the warm room I looked at the weather. Oh great temps are to be in the 50s which means it is too warm for cold gear and too cold for not wearing it as well. So I decide to take Nick's advice and wear what I want to be wearing middle of the race instead of the beginning of the race. And I fought the temptation to put on more clothes. I went out of the hotel and in, out and in and once again out and in before deciding short sleeves was going to be gear I would wear.
At the hotel I met up with Robin and Karthik. I lost Robin during the meet up for the runners but Karthik and I started together until that is when I had to go to the restroom for one final time. But we found each other again and I don't know how during the first 5 or 6 miles. Until he finally had to pull back.
My run was great for the first 15 or so miles. I kept my pace at the pace that I kept for our training runs. I was on pace for a 4:40 or so finish. It was feeling great although the first part of the race I felt some pain but ran through it. I didn't allow myself to speed up and I tried not to slow down. I kept drinking water and gatorade and kept with my fueling plan as well. Didn't miss any of those. Kept my race plan on par with how I planned it. But then like when you hear a pop in your car and you know it is trouble something happened to me that I knew was going to be trouble for the rest of the run. My legs started to feel tired, my feet started to hurt and then the real problem. I felt the cramps coming on in my legs. But still I kept going although this time it was a bit slower. That became a little bit slower still and finally to even slower than that. Heck people may have been looking at me and wondering if I was even moving but yes sir I am moving.
Now during my last 6 miles I almost got hit by a car. Thank you officer for sending me and the car at the same time. And if that wasn't bad enough I also almost got hit by a stroller. How can a stroller hit the only person in front of you. You had many directions to go to avoid me and yet you went for the only thing in front of you. Yeah real smart there. But I am a survivor I tell ya.
Finally I cross the finish line after running for 5:39 and yes I said 5 hours and 39 minutes. Hey I want to get my money's worth just like the parking fee. And boy did I get my money's worth on this race.
So this race was faster than Cowtown 2014 but about an hour slower than my first marathon with the BCS Marathon 2013. So it wasn't the worst I ran that is for sure but I can see that I need to improve on the back half of these races. Both the BCS and Dallas Marathon's I ran the first half as good as I could have expected only to fall back on those paces during the second half of the marathon.
Next goal is to do either Flying Pig 2017 or 2018, Cowtown Ultra 2018 or Chicago 2017 or 2018.

Confident Builder
I went into Saturday's run with a lot of doubt. Had a bad week of running and then to head into a 21 mile run seemed impossible for me. I actually woke up feeling good for a long run but still wondered if I had it in me. 21 is still a long distance for someone who didn't have a solid week behind him.
We started the run a little fast for me. But after the 2 mile break I got into my running pace for the rest of the run. The weather was perfect and I was over dressed to say the least. Never believe the weather app for your temperature I have learned yet again. But I still wore what I will be wearing for my December 11th marathon unless it is still warm by them. But this guy is hoping for a nice 30s temperature throughout the race.
I loved both of my running coaches that I ran with yesterday. Both were great and neither allowed me to really walk during my run. I did feel that Kim was a better pacer with me though. She and I ran about 12 or so miles before we ran into Nick and them. We switched coaches and I spent the rest of the run with Stacy. She is great as well. Talks a little more with me which is good unless you are cold and your jaw doesn't seem to work and you cannot talk due to it being cold. She had me pacing slightly faster. And at the end of the run I felt very good. Not good enough to run again granted but felt good and without too many pains and aches. The run lasted for a little more than 4 hours. Yes I get my money's worth when I run long distances. And to think I actually really hate running long distances. But I do it because that final mile and finishing is just such a rush.
Finally we start tapering so I have that to look forward to until my actual race.

20 Miles I Think I Can Do It
Going into Saturday's long run I was having doubts that I can finish my next marathon. I haven't run 20 anything in over 2+ years. But while I was a sloth on the run I at least finished it. Slow as can be that is for sure. My wall hit me sooner than I expected so I need to improve that over the next long run in a couple of weeks. That weekend will be 22 miles. My wall came in around mile 15 and lasted for the remainder of the run. So yeah that needs to change because 11 miles of wall running is no fun.
I am still debating doing the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati. I heard one from our group mentioned that she wanted to do that race as well. It is a good one and tops the annual Runner's World top marathons. But that would have to be worked out since it falls a week after mother's day. And I can only travel up there for one of those weekends. But it is on my bucket list that is for sure.
Next week is only 12 miles on Saturday plus my half marathon on Sunday. So I will get a lot of miles in that weekend. Or at least a lot of miles for someone like me. A person who actually hates running for long distances. Even though my favorite race distance is the half marathon. I can handle 13 miles and do enjoy that distance. But I am seeing my times for the half getting slower and slower lately. Not sure if that is due to my age now or I just don't train correctly for those races.

Cooper Tri - Part 2
Ok so I have not seen my results yet. Race was only last weekend. So this will be without the bias feelings of knowing what I actually did for my second Cooper Tri this year.
Before the swim even started I was already anxious. The race being delayed sure as heck didn't help me either. Once I finally get into the water I start out strong. Swimming like Coach Lyndsi taught me. And then it started. I couldn't catch my rhythm and my breath. I felt like when I could control it I swam great and I felt strong for a change. But unfortunately those moments were very few and far between. Heck I do not even have a clue how long it took me to swim it. I am pretty sure the sun went from rising to high noon before I got out of the pool. But like all good or bad swims it sure feels great to get to the end and see my fat ass getting out of the pool.
The transition between swim and bike was actually pretty good and quick for me at least.
The bike was felt slow and felt like the 12 miles would never end. Once again there were basically no flat areas on the course. It was just a long ever gaining incline that never seems to end. Yeah I just love those kinds of courses. But then again it could be worst. It could have been Keller and those mountain type hills that they forces us to do them over and over again. Bike was decent but I still felt like it was not my best.
The transition between bike and run was not so good. Had to sit down a no-no. But I did it anyway. I believe Coach Lyndsi didn't see me do that so that is good.
The run started great. But it didn't last long. I had a very good first mile. Took the hill by foot and then finally got back to running once the ground leveled out again. The run was a typical run for me after a bike. Not as fast as I would run a 5K without the bike that is for sure. I finished strong on the run and in the end that is all that matters. It is how you end. Don't leave the tank with any fuel left.
Now I am about to look at my results.
As we can see I did at least manage not to finish last on the swim. My transition was decent. My bike was actually faster than normal which is good but as you can see I am still slow. I was only better than about 37 people. Second transition was bad. And my run not as good as I felt it was. Dang...
And lastly I finished with these numbers
So I did not finish last in my age group so that is good. I managed to beat 6 other men out there although those were probably the 6 men that were 80+ in age.
Oh well Round 3 is coming...

Cooper Sprint Triathlon Report
Woke up and the first thing I see outside my window are rain clouds and lightning. Then there was heavy rain on my drive up to McKinney. Driving through Frisco I thought I just wasted money on this race because surely they will be cancelling this one. But once in McKinney the rain went away and only lightning remained and even that only last another thirty minutes. Finally found Dawn and we got ready for the race, walked around and I wanted to check out the pool depth. Which she already knew the answer to so that was nice. Then we found Coach Lyndsi and talked to her for a little while. I, being me, had to do my pre-race routine of going to the restroom. Once out Coach Lyndsi found me and had me watch people jumping into the pool because, yes, that is what caused my freak out last race. Strange as it might sound but last race I jumped in feet first and within a second of hitting the water my anxiety jumped through the roof and the swim before it even got started pretty much ended for me. It was horrible and Coach Lyndsi knowing about that event made sure to pull me aside and have me watch how all these people were entering into the pool because seeing all of those entries did help me when it came my time.
Finally jumped in line with Dawn and followed her into the pool. I entered the pool how I prefer to do and the swim actually started pretty good. I will admit the depth of only 4'11" did help my mindset. I swam but still had to stop every now and then. I did pretty good but was still swallowing some water or at least taking more water in then is normal even for me. When I got to the 200 meter mark I saw these feet coming towards me and at that moment thought, oh great, they are kicking me out of the race for being so slow. Yes I really thought that. But to my surprise it was Coach Lyndsi. She told me about the good I was doing and reminding me that while I was doing good that my stopping was mostly in my head and that I could do this. That I had done this before and can do it again. Inside I agreed with her, but, also inside, all I could see were miles of distance between each end of the pool even though it was only 50 meters. When I finished the swim I actually felt great. This was the first race I did not leave the pool with anxiety high and me not being able to calm myself down to focus on what was next for me. But this time when I exited the pool I was clear minded and could focus on getting my bike gear on and starting the cycling part of the race. Side note is that I swam the 350 in 14:54 which was third worst for the race and that included the people over 70 who killed me in the swim time. But what I see is that for 350 meters to have that swim time is a great start to improving my overall swim game. Because I would normally swim that in a race that had a distance of 275. So I was extremely happy with this swim and cannot wait for the next Cooper Tri to see if I can better that time.
Transition time for me was great between the swim and the bike. It was my fastest transition time for me at least for any race. A 1:19 is still not fast but compared to the previous two years of transition timing this made me like like Superman changing clothes.
The bike portion got me hard. First it was cold and I do not handle cold. Then it was one of those slight yet steady inclines that never seems to end type of hills and to top it off there was an extremely strong wind that was pounding me head on. Of course it would be head on. Why would wind be a benefit in your ride and help you up that hill. I just never saw myself able to maintain a speed that was anything but the speed that I always seem to ride and that being 15mph. So while it was a very short distance of 12 miles it also was a very hard 12 miles. The bike time was 48 minutes which for me is, sadly, about what I would do it in for either a race or training session. I just cannot seem to get my average speed to increase even after all these years, yes, all two of them.
For the second transition time it was a little slower but still better than the previous races between the bike and the run. I did it in 1:45 and mostly due to my shoes not fitting when I tried to put them on. But on a positive note. This was the first race where I did not sit down during either transition to change gear. So lets see that as a positive thing I can get from this race.
The run started good for me. Then my legs finally caught up with my mind and bam it hit me. My legs are worn out. I went from run to run / walk. I did my run in what I thought was a pretty good run. Even though my run time would show differently but I didn't know that during the run or right after. Although yes I did know because I was wearing my Garmin but it felt faster for me. I talk to several people for a brief moment but it was mostly me just focusing on each turn, each step and trying to find the water stops to help me figure out what distance is still needed to finish. I love how running is a strong suit for me but when it comes to triathlons it is not. But that is of course more because I use so much energy in the bike that I just seem to wear out my legs before the run can even start. Time for the run was 34 minutes and yes that is a little faster than my last couple of triathlons so yes another positive thing from this race.
Overall time was 1:40:00 which is my first time under 1:55 or 2 hours. The time looks great compared to those other races but the bike ride was a few miles shorter in distance then those other races but still seeing that time does make me happy.
I finished third from last in my age group which is actually an improvement by one or two spots. :) The one thing I noticed was that if I can shave off even just 2 minutes I would be out of those lowly final three spots for the age group. I think I could do that. Heck I know I should be able to shave at least a minute off transitions and my swim should see some time savings as well down the road. I think I need to continue practicing doing the 50s that Coach Lyndsi is having me do because for this race each lap is going to be 50 long no matter how much I would like to change that it will not change. And if the hurricane winds were not there I can see my speed maybe increasing a little which would also shave off some time there as well for me.
Next race I believe is Wounded Warrior. Going back to my running races for the next one. But lots of swimming in the meantime.

Race Report - Texadega Nights
First what a great concept for any event even for an old man like me. It has been a few years since I pull something like this. This being staying up late until the early morning hours. But it was worth it. Met some great people, as usual. And I, being me, got their early, which made the night even longer.
So my day starts with me and Dawn swimming at LA Fitness that morning. I got in around 1200 meters for this swim. And they were some hard earned meters at that. I spent the whole morning just trying to catch my breath. It was like I was swimming during a race. Which after about half way through I decided to treat it as such. A race type swim instead of just swimming. And well it was just hard. For whatever reason I just couldn't get from one end to the other consistently without either swallowing water or just having an race type attack. But I didn't quit and in the end the swim was finished and, as usual, I was fine again. So with that being over I headed home to try and get a nap in there and something to eat before the evening event started.
Got to the race track at 9pm, got my race distance changed, and then just hung out for a few hours before the race started. Finally it is 11:45PM, and yes I said almost midnight, my portion of the race starts. I start my run towards the 9 miles I signed up for. I thought I might even run more before the race started. The first two miles were strong for me. I ran both of those miles in a 9:30 pace but the uneven ground finally caught up to my back and I sent the next 3 miles fighting that issue. But with my body I have learned that eventually the pain or tightness will go away. Once my body realizes that I am not quitting it gets back to normal. So the next mile was me deciding to run to the finish line or continue on to the final three miles. Well, of course, I ran the final 3 miles but any additional milage just left my mind. I was finished and to continue would just be unfair for the rest of the group to witness. Nothing more pathic than seeing a grown man crying and crawling on towards the next mile or two. So to save them and myself I just headed off to the finish line. It ended up not being a bad run for me after all. And I would do this race again in a heart beat. Now that I know about the surface I would be better prepared for the run next year.
So I get home around 3AM and the day is finally over.

No Caveman this year
I have decided to use this race this weekend as one that I watch and study. To see how others transition between swim to bike and from bike to run. To take what I have been taught by Coach Lyndsi and to see others apply it and then see what I need to fix or correct for my future races. Plus I am leaning towards more Cooper Tri's because from what I am told the pool situation might be better for my anxiety and this could lead to me actually enjoying the race completely without panicking during the swim. I might still be bad at the swim but at least when I have to stop I can stand up and who knows for me that might make all the difference. I will still do Old College Tri and Monster as well so I am not going to get rid of deep water swimming in my future but limiting it by one race could be a wiser decision for me.
Plus this would feel so different for me to be at a race and not partake in it. I can actually cheer on my mates like Ms. Novia and Dawn, if they are doing it.
Anyway lately it has been me just swimming here and swimming there and swimming everywhere. I have put more time in the water than most labs. And labs actually love the water. Ran against mother nature and she won, sadly. But I did finish so take that mother nature. So up yours mother nature.
I biked in strong winds and cross-winds that made me ponder death and where I would like to be buried. Thanks for that Coach Lyndsi.
And now I got a few days away from the water on my schedule so I have more running and biking to come.
So my next race is TBD I guess. Probably Cooper Tri in May or June I believe. Better find that out so I don't miss it.

This Week In Review
Okay so this week I swam more than I have ever swam before in any given one week time frame. I got pushed by my coach and training friend. Dawn always seems to show up wherever I am with Coach Lyndsi. And so for Wednesday after coach left and even though I swam 175 before everyone got there Dawn still pushed me to finish another 100. Now I felt good about it. But oh yeah, I was hoping that once our leader left it would be a good time to sneak out as well. Add that to Monday where I did 1175 out of 1300 meters but then on Friday I could only manage 500 meters out of 1500 planned. My body was just worn out. And it was only then hanging onto the wall with a spirit that wanted to go and a body that said, oh hell no, that I realized that this should have been pushed out to Saturday instead of attempted on Friday.
Because on top of those swims I had a 11 mile bike ride in 26mph winds that scared the living crap out of me. Seriously I had to lean into the wind just to stay straight and to keep my balance. Yeah that wasn't a fun ride at all. The only ride worst than that was my first ever race ride when it was both windy and raining for my first real ride. Oh yeah that was another fun ride. NOT.
And then on Thursday I ran 7 miles out of a planned 8 mile run. It wasn't a scheduled planned run just the amount that I decided to run when I left my apartment and said how many? How about 8? Sounds good to me I said to myself and then off I went.
And that doesn't include my workout last Sunday so all in all it was about 6 or 7 days straight workout of some sort without any off days. But to be honest everything was good so good, for me at least, that I didn't even think about taking off. Even after the Sunday lecture that my coach did and that I attended where she said "ATHLETES NEED TO TAKE ONE DAY OFF A WEEK TO REST" and "YES IT IS THAT IMPORTANT". Okay I may not have quoted Coach Lyndsi word for word but it was pretty close. Now I see why she is coach and I am student. Because I seem to need more learning because I seem to be more stubborn that most people.
So this coming week I will take off at least one day on top of my taking off today.

Horrible Race - Time to Retire?
This was by far the worst triathlon race I have ever had since well my very first triathlon. I am not sure if my starting position caused any of this or not. But I did have a hard time sleeping because of my starting number last night which only added to how bad this race went for me.
First the swim. Since I was at the front of the pack I saw everyone jumping into the pool. I knew that if I entered the pool the way I prefer I would have been spotted for a newbie instead of someone that should have had my number. Then I notice other friends of mine and fellow DFW Tri'ers that I know have done half-ironman and/or full ironman behind me in the starting position. So that only added to my pressure I was putting on myself. Once I jumped into the pool that caused an immediate panic attack for me. I mean instant panic attack. I couldn't catch my breathe, I couldn't breath like I did all week, and I had only gone a few feet and still had basically the full 300 meters to go. I struggled to get from one side to the other. Swimming a few feet and dragging my ass the rest of the way by holding onto the ropes between lanes. And I repeated over and over again until finally I made it to the end like 10 hours later or at least it felt it took me that long. I am realizing that another problem of mine, and most likely in my head, is that I think that everyone is watching me. And I hate being watched no matter what I do in life.
Now to the bike. They changed the course and had us doing 6 steep hills over a 15 mile course. By the time I got through the first two of those hills my legs were burning and I was seriously considering dropping out. But as some of you know I can be stubborn and hate to admit that I cannot do something. And quitting would have me admitting I cannot do this so I continued and after the second loop the thought of quitting at least left me. But the burning legs continued loop after loop after the final loop. By the time I got back to the end of the transition area I had gone from a rate G person to someone you would not want your kids hearing me talk to because I was cussing up a storm. I was very upset.
And before I get to the run here is how my transitions went. Before the race my only two goals were to swim the pool without any problems (failed) and improve my transition times (failed). So after the pool I get to my spot and found the wind had knocked all my stuff around so I had to quickly get those items off the ground and put on my shoes. Well that went bad but probably quicker than it was all last year. BUT when I got back from the bike and transitioning to the run everything went to hell. I couldn't get my running shoes on. I tried and tried and finally had to sit down and get them on. So that is when my language really took a turn for the worst. Coming from a ride like that and even with me having my shoes set the night before so they would just slide on and then to have to sit on the ground to put them on was probably the last straw for me on this race. I was beyond pissed.
Finally the run. My legs were finished, my attitude was on the edge of being finished and a simple 5K might as well had been a half-marathon for me because it felt like it was never going to finish. Outside of my legs being tired the run was okay I guess in the end. It was a lot slower than yesterday but yesterday I wasn't riding a bike either before that race. It was slow and until I see the final numbers I am going to say it probably took me 36 miles to run 3.1 miles.
So right now I am seriously considering not doing the Caveman but probably will in the end. This race has at least put one thing in my mind. And that is that I need to lower my race schedule for triathlons this year and start focusing more on training in deeper pools when I can. I need to stimulate race starts however that is possible and I need to figure out how to overcome my anxiety and panic attacks when it comes to swimming. Because this is just not natural for someone my age to have anxiety over swimming and freaking the hell out when it comes to race day.
So needless to say this was a horrible race for me. I am back to square one it appears. I do not want to retire because well first of all I am paying to do these races not them paying me so can someone really retire from races if they are not being sponsored by anyone. Good question. This is going to be a long year for me it seems.
But I do not know how my final numbers look yet. I am probably not going to look at them for a few days because I am so disappointment in myself for how bad I did and really do not want to see the numbers only for them to prove it to me on exactly how bad it was.

Apparently I am an Idiot
Well I get to the race site at 6:30AM for what I miss read and ended up being an 9AM start for the actual race. Oops. That was a shocked for me at least. I am guessing everyone else read the WHOLE email where it probably stated an 9AM start time. So I get my packet, listen to some music and get myself ready. As usual before any race I am constantly going to the restroom. I am not sure if it is nerves or what but whatever it is it is a ritual for me. And once the race starts I suddenly no longer have to use the restroom. Strange. Anyway.
I said to myself here is the goal. Take it easy, run about 11 minute mile because no need to hurt yourself or your calves, just finish in one piece and get some beer. Pretty simple goal you would think. And pretty simple to follow through with as well you would think. But oh no not me. Because I am an idiot apparently. As Diane would always say "don't just start out fast" and inside she is probably thinking idiot as well. :)
So she would probably be right but again moving on. I started the race at an 8:20 first mile and a second mile of 9:20 and both of those were far faster than my goal time. I know that no one sets a goal of actually going slower than they normally run but yes that was still my goal. I finished the race with my fastest 5K since the Christmas run in 2012. And far faster than what I was thinking I would do. Apparently I like to follow women in ponytails and then just coast off of their pace. I probably should start trying to find slower women with ponytails I guess. I tweaked my back a little. Very little but it did cause me to have to stop a couple of times during the run to walk and get it back to feeling better. Which would also mean that my actual race pace was better than my ending pace of 9:16 per mile since those few times I had to walk would have slower me down, of course. But I finished the race in 28:38 and for me that was pretty fast and a lot faster than I wanted.
But all in all I finished with no calves problems and I doubt my back will bother me tomorrow. So that is great. Now it is on to a quick nap and then prepare for tomorrow's sprint tri.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Thanks to Coach Lyndsi I got a good lesson in today. The good is that I am improving and I didn't cramp until late into the session. She puts me through a lot of work but if I can survive her hour long session my "6 minute" 300 meter swim should be a cake walk. And cake does sound good right now. Oh dang it trying to cut out those kind of foods while I am training.
The bad is that well my cramps did come back and have been an issue all week for me. So I will be taking the race tomorrow lightly. Just run, don't do anything stupid, drink beer and prepare for Sunday. So hopefully this can become an former issue going into the coming weeks. And I am starting to eat multiple bananas a day to help fight this. And who doesn't love bananas.
The ugly is well seeing me in a swim suit. Which for Sunday will not be an issue for the people attending the event. Luckily for them that is. Man I need to trade in my 12 pack abs in for something of a smaller size like a 4 pack abs. Then I would be like look at this body bitches. Or at least I would say that in my mind.
Well short but blame it on Lyndsi. After an hour with her training I am lucky to still be standing and awake. Those lessons can wear a kid out. And I haven't been a kid in a long time.

Swimming a lot
This past week I have already swam more than I have ever swam in any given month over the last couple of years. And I still have a 1 on 1 swim lesson tomorrow and a swim scheduled for Friday NOT to mention race day on Sunday. If I survived this week I should be a better swimmer than I have ever been. Now I just need to figure out what is causing me to cramp up so much half-way through my swims.
I know this has been one of my weakest areas of my game during the tri-events. But hopefully these next 6 months will prove to be beneficial in my swim game. I would love to see myself at least swimming the 300 meters required for the triathlon better and hopefully faster as well. If I can get my swimming better than I could hopefully start seeing myself moving up the leader board. One day I hope that instead of seeing myself in the bottom 3 I will start to see myself in the middle of the pack.
Swim on young man just swim on.

Cowtown Report
Got to Fort Worth today at 5:35AM and slowly got over to the race. Like my usual routine it is getting to the race early and getting myself ready for the race. Saw a couple of my friends before the race. Got into my corral. And froze until the race started. Now before we start the race let's see where I was before this race.
Trained a lot before this race. Worked with Coach Lyndsi and a bunch of great people for the last many weeks. It all runs together when you are an old man. But I did at least go from a person who was tired of running and wasn't successfully doing it in my tri's over the last couple of years to now someone who feels like his running is improving his run game for the coming year.
Race starts at 7 and I didn't actually get started until 7:18 because of my corral. First 3.1 miles I ran at a pretty decent pace for me. Ran it in 31 minutes which for me lately I would take in a heart beat. And considering how my 5Ks go for triathlons, yes please, I would love to have that time. Then my right top of my ankle started getting tight. Which is strange considering that all through training it was on the left side for that tightness. So I fought through that for a few miles. Around mile 6 or 7 mile the pain went away and I was on my way again. Fought through a lot of endurance issues after that and hit a wall around mile 11 which sucks because it was so close to the end. And like last time I ran this race the end is never the end. It was a never ending turn after turn hoping to see the finish line only to see more road then finish line. Finally found the finish line and the race was over for me. This time I finished in 2:17 something. I usually find myself finishing in some form or another in the 2:15 range give or take a minute or two. And today was no different.
I am ready to take my running game up a level this year.
And special thanks goes to Coach Lyndsi and the program with DFWTri that helped me get to this point.
Next race is the Shannon's 5K, 12th of March.

Back for Year 3 for This Tri "Wannabe" Athlete
Well I am getting ready for year 3 of this triathlete experiment. Year 1 was the learning stage of my experiment. Year 2 was the try and improve on the 1st year. Now in Year 3 it is to see if I learned from my past mistakes and have I taken any steps forward in improving my overall game.
Well I can say that this year I will be going into the season with a better running game then I did over the first two years. I am in the mist of training for the Cowtown Half at the end of February and then I start my tri-season only a couple of weeks after that. So I feel that for the running portion I should be able to see some form of improvement there.
My swim game will still suck but what's new there. I am hoping to get Coach Lyndsi to be my swim coach but that would not start until the first of March so needless to say I will not be ready for the swim portion when St. Pat's Tri comes a calling.
My bike game is in the same boat. I feel like I am a better biker than I was last year but I haven't been on the bike to much yet to start 2016 off. So I might be a little behind for the first race as well there.
Well that is a bunch of good news for me. Two events I feel I have no shot at and only one where I do. But I am going into this year with one goal. Just have fun and don't let the stress of swimming overcome me to the point where I am allowing that experience to ruin everything else. I know going into any race that if I am able to walk / run away from the pool and heading to my bike then I have achieved the goal of not drowning. And I need to start leaving the anxiety of swimming behind me after that point and head to the areas where I stand a chance at competing.
So this year my other goal is to write more blogs and to keep track of what I am doing in a more regular format.

Pioneer Sprint Tri '15 Report
Well this race day didn't start how I would have liked. Even after getting all my gear ready the night before I still left my house around 5 am. Well if you know me and that the transition area opens at 5:30 then you would figured out that I wanted to be there at 5 am not just leaving. So I was a little bit rushed but I worked on keeping my calmness in situations like this and it worked. I got to Denton at 5:27 so I was still there plenty of time to get my gear set up and ready for the race.
Before the race even started I decided not to do any practice laps. Even though it was only 200 yards and I could have done a couple of laps without it effecting my overall performance because you know I suck at swimming. Instead I just walked a little into the outer water area to get a feel for the temperature of the water and then I did what I was contemplating using my anxiety pills before a race. I hadn't gone it for the first two this year and my swim was bad both times. I believe it isn't about the depth anymore but rather the fact that once the guy says go I am on the timer. But this time I decided to take my anxiety pill and try it out. Well it must have worked. Once I heard him say go, I got into the water, swam 50 yards pretty much with one of my quickest times and ended up having my best swim ever for a race. Only 200 yards but for me it might as well been swimming across the English Channel. I did it in 7:43 which was also about 2 minutes faster than I swam that same distance last year.
Finished the swim and for the first time ever my mind was clear, my nerves were normal and I was ready for the next event. I got my bike and off I went. I rode the first let's say 6 miles at the fastest time I have ever had. But those Denton hills that just keep on going slightly higher and higher ended up doing me in. But the time I got to the turn around spot I was starting to feel my legs getting a little worn out. But I stopped for a brief moment to put on my riding gloves and started back up and still finished very strong for me. I ended up doing the 16 miles in a little over an hour. For me, even on practice rides, I only get about 15 to 15.3 miles for a hour ride. So thanks to Coach Lyndsi I am starting to see speed, not the drug, on my rides.
So I get to my point where I should have been saying yes my strongest point of the game RUNNING. But no so fast there. I start off looking for water. I don't care if a strange man in an over coat had some or if I had to steal it from a little kid but I just needed water. Found it. And now I can start my run. I ended up doing the 5k in about 37 miles I believe. Not good at all but to be fair. This has actually turned out to be my weakest part of my game. I still have not gotten myself over the brick. I can ride and I can run but put them back to back and yes I am pretty much done. But even with the heat I didn't feel like my body was done I just felt like I sure would love to see a finish line right about now.
Last year when I did this race about 15 yards or so away from the finish line both of my legs cramped up horribly. I cross the line got my medal and headed to anything that I could hold unto until those cramps past through. It was horrible to say the least. This year when I cross the finish line the only thing that was cramping was a memory of last year. Because this year I felt very good crossing that finish line.
So now I can just worry about preparing for my next race(s). And that would be me considering a back to back sprint tri's Labor Day weekend. I might want to ask Coach Lyndsi if she thinks I can handle it. But again I am not good so it is not like if I wear out on that 2nd race that it would greatly effect my timing.

I might want to ask Coach Lyndsi if she thinks I can handle it. But again I am not good so it is not like if I wear out on that 2nd race that it would greatly effect my timing.

Tri Season Underway
Well I forgot to post my first race results so I am doing a double duty tonight with reviewing both races. I am comparing myself to last years results to see improvement or if improvement is still needed.
Season started off with the St. Patrick's Tri and that was also my first ever tri-event I did.
Last year I finished in 2:00:20 overall.
Swim (300 meters) - 20:56 - and of course that was good considering I was freaking out due to the depth of the water.
Bike (12.6 miles) - 58:57 - this was tough because it was cold, wet, strong winds and again I was still freaked out from the swim and that carried over to my bike.
Run (3.1 miles) - 32:42 - which considering everything that happened I was shocked I ran so good.
This year I finished in 1:48:42 overall and an almost 12 minute improvement.
Swim (300 meters) - 11:46 - Coach Lyndsi and I really focused more on improving my swim and endurance and it worked. I still freaked out but not as bad as it was last year and that shocked me because I felt ready to go. Still overall very happy with this result.
Bike (12.6 miles) - 56:17 - not really happy as there was no improvement which was evidence through my time and at the end of the bike I felt my legs were more tired than they should have been.
Run (3.1 miles) 37:00 - yeah not a great run and my tired legs were not getting any stronger as I continued to run.
So for St. Patricks Tri I was overall satisfied with my results as I was mostly focusing on over coming my swimming troubles and felt like I did.
This past Sunday was Caveman Tri.
Last year I finished in 2:03:01
Swim (275 yards) - 13:25 - of course better than St Pat Tri for my second tri event and a little faster but still I was hugging the middle rope in the water to get from point A to point B.
Bike (14 miles) - 59:57 - which for last year and this year about my average speed which is around 15 miles every hour.
Run (3.1 miles) - 40:15 - the bike course killed my legs and the pain I had running was wow. Very slow for anyone to run but I made it through and that I guess is all I can say.
This year I finished in 1:57:45 and only a slight improvement but I had to struggle with two flat tires on my bike that cost me a lot of time and still improved by 6 minutes even with those troubles.
Swim (275 yards) - 9:51 - this time and for the first time ever I felt good during and after the swim. Major improvement from last year by almost 4 minutes.
Bike (14 miles) - 1:02:41 - okay this was the first time I ever thought about really calling a cab, swag wagon or a stranger to just take me back because I was done. The course just like last year was hilly and killing my legs and draining any strength that I had left. Plus I got a flat back tire. Fixed it quickly and was back on the road ONLY to have the same tire go flat again about 1 or so miles down the road. I got lucky as I pasted the Tri Shop car who was there to help bikers in trouble and I was one of those bikers needing help. I got lucky as he was able to fix the tire quickly and efficiently. Finally was moving again and while the break helped my legs I lost a ton of time. Finally finished my ride in a bad mood, tired legs and just wanted to get this done.
Run (3.1 miles) - 37:26 - again this run course like the bike course hates my body. My legs were in the most pain ever. It even hurt when I walked but after a great swim I wasn't going to quit now. I had my chances to quit on the bike course and didn't use them. So I just decided that pain or not I was going to finish because as they say pain is temporary but glory is forever. Or something like that. And yes the pain went away once I was finished.
Next race right now is scheduled for Cooper Tri on May 16th. So I have time to work on my game. I am excited about how the season is starting and can't wait to continue my journey.

The Swim Lesson
I love my swim coach. She encourages as she teaches and she see positives in areas I see negatives. One hour of swimming is a lot of swimming but I made it due to her. Today's lesson was a great one. I am working on getting myself ready for the 2015 season which starts in about 6 or so weeks. I am already signed up and am looking to expand my season by another 3 to 5 more races than I did last year. But I know that no matter how many races I run I must conquer the swim first. Whether I agree with it or not swimming is apart of the triathlon. And due to that I have to get through it no matter what. Even if I die while swimming and they come and revive me I know that I would STILL have to finish the swim first before I am allowed to go forward. So that is why Coach Lyndsi is so important to me. Because without her I would still be that person that is looking at the water and saying you want me to do WHAT and followed by the words OH HELL NO. But since she has helped me since day one I am actually in the water and while I am still panicking I am at least seeing improvements along the way. Hopefully this season I will improve on my swimming times. It truly is the only thing I want to see improve the most. I would love to see my cycling and running times improve but in the end if I can see improvements in my swim then no matter how bad the rest of the race might be I will still be able to say at least I saw improvements in my swim.

2015 Goals
Here are my goals I am setting for myself entering into the year of 2015.
1 - Getting myself stronger physically and spiritually
2 - Improve on my 2014 Sprint Tri times
3 - Run 6 to 8 half marathons this year with the first one being probably Benbrook. I need to keep myself in the best possible running condition. It is something I failed to do last year and I paid for it with my first four triathlons
4 - Train and run a marathon sometime this year with the training coinciding with me running an ultra-marathon either late this year or Cowtown of 2016
5 - Train for Hotter Than Hell bike race - 100 mile race
6 - Become more involved at Gateway Church. I have already put my name in the hat for a couple of volunteering possibilities
7 - Start taking part of the group training with DFW Tri Club. Time to swallow my pride and fear of not being up to par and just go. After all my race results have already proven I am both not up to par with the rest of the group and that even 70 year olds can get across the finish line quicker than me. So I need to go and improve. Period
8 - Increase my sprint tri's participation and I will do that by adding 3 sprint tri's from Cooper Craig Ranch and will try and find more throughout the year
9 - Lose at least 20#s and change my diet to a more healthier one
10 - Work on my social anxiety part 2. As I mention in my recap of 2014 I failed to improve IMO and will try once again to improve on something that both scares me and I am uncomfortable with it
11 - Work again on learning something new on a weekly basis
And this year I am adding a verse I want to live by for this year as well
James 4:14 "Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" NKJV
I will be changing all my email signatures to reflect this. This means a lot to me because we are only on this planet but for a blink of an eye. I need to make what blink I have mean something not only to me but to others around me.

My Grades For My 2014 Goals
My 2014 Goals Final Grade:
Join DFW Tri Club and start training for my first tri. Might be a small one for 2014 but I would be focusing on 2015 for an bigger tri race for sure. Of course apart of this goal will also involve me to learn how to swim with a bad shoulder and that one other little thing. Finding a bike.
Grade B-: I did join the DFW Tri Club and I did do 5 sprint tri's and I am a ton better of a swimmer than I was a year ago. But I am far from doing any bigger races this year as I just do not feel comfortable enough with my shoulder to do any long open water swims which would prevent 2015 being that year when I went beyond the sprint tri.
Run at least 2 marathons this year. First of those two is in two months. So after that it would probably be the BCS one in College Station or I will find one before the year is over.
Grade C: I did Cowtown in February and then never saw another marathon. So only half of this goal was completed and thus a C was given.
Try to get entered into the Marine Corp Marathon. Just luck of the draw for this one. It sells out quickly every year.
Try to get entered into the Marine Corp Marathon. Just luck of the draw for this one. It sells out quickly every year.
Grade F: Because I didn't make it to the marathon.
Get my weight down to 140 again. I gained weight for the marathon but now I need to focus on getting it back to an manageable weight.
Grade F: As I weight myself tonight and I am at 166. So 26 over goal is not good enough. I got a long ways to go that is for sure on this one.

Grade F: As I weight myself tonight and I am at 166. So 26 over goal is not good enough. I got a long ways to go that is for sure on this one.
Get more involved in my church for men's and single's ministry. I may not be volunteering a lot, if any at all, but I still need to be involved in other ways regardless.
Grade C: I did not get involved in men's or single's group. I did attend one single's group and my anxiety shot through the roof and that was before they asked everyone to go around asking questions and find people with the same likes as you. I saw an exit sign and went out it. But I did do Equip Classes throughout the year and that saved my grade from an F to a C.
Try to learn one thing a week. Could be simple like how to cook salmon on the grill, to how to improve my knowledge in business, to something weird like math formulas. As long as it is new to me.

Grade B: I did learn a lot of triathlon stuff like swimming and biking and I did learn a few other things throughout the year but in the end not as much as I would have liked.
Train my mind to stay focused on my running goals.
Train my mind to stay focused on my running goals.
Grade B-: For a person who believes he lives like he has ADD I think I did okay. Nothing great because I did find myself losing focus now and then.
Get a grip on my General Anxiety and Social Anxiety in my life and to be there for anyone else who might struggle with this as well.
Get a grip on my General Anxiety and Social Anxiety in my life and to be there for anyone else who might struggle with this as well.
Grade F or D-: Well let's just say that even though I was a fun run director for LGRAW overall I sucked in this category and it is the hardest thing I have to deal with in my life. I failed at getting better as I was in and out so quickly on some events that I heard was that Flash because all they saw was me in and back out quickly. Example is I went to two Christmas parties on the same day and stayed at one for about five minutes and then stayed at the other for about an hour. Yes I am that guy.
Get closer to God.
Get closer to God.
Grade C-: Okay I will always feel I need to get closer to God and I will never be satisfied with how I am doing it as well.
And finally to find a person or two in my life that would think that these goals are beyond my reach. I have one already in my life but if I can add another person or two that would only motivate me all the more to prove them wrong.
And finally to find a person or two in my life that would think that these goals are beyond my reach. I have one already in my life but if I can add another person or two that would only motivate me all the more to prove them wrong.
Grade C: I really did not pay attention to the haters in my life even it came to this goal so I didn't look for people who doubted me.
2014 is all about going beyond what I have ever done before in my life. To prove to myself that I can do the impossible. And heck if I can prove others wrong along the way more the merrier for me.
2014 is all about going beyond what I have ever done before in my life. To prove to myself that I can do the impossible. And heck if I can prove others wrong along the way more the merrier for me.
Overall Grade C+: I achieve more than I thought I ever could when it came to triathlons and I still found a great church and took part in it, not as much as I would like, and overall I saw some growth in what I did. I know I can do better but goals are meant to exceed your expectations and I believe I did that in the end.

9 Miles of Happiness
This past Saturday I forgot my cycling shoes. Mind you I didn't forget the bike, the clothes or the rider just the shoes. After saying a few choice words of unhappiness I decided to do the next best thing. See just how far it is one point of the lake to the other point of the lake. Being White Rock and being me starting from my car and ending at my car. Just in case you were wondering it is 9 miles and pretty close to being exactly 9 at that as well. I haven't ran that far on any one run since Cowtown Marathon and the summer of the back issues.
Well over the last month or so I have been aggressively taking cryo and using the machine that they have to have adjust the back. It didn't work at first but then again nothing ever just starts solving a problem. It takes time and patience to see results. I am starting to see my mileage increase with every run and I am thinking of doing to full marathon again before the year is over. Ask me that question in July and August and I would have said a hell no to any thought of a marathon again. But now I am already planning on two halfs before my birthday (don't ask me when that is) and a goal of a full in December.
So as I was running I noticed that I was sore but not in the back. I am sore due to lack of distance in my training but I went the full 9 miles without any issues with the back. That brings me a good nice smile to my face. I truly thought that I would be limited to be just an average runner with little to no chance of actually doing anymore long distance runs. NO WAIT. I did run 9 miles since Cowtown. How could I have forgotten Too Hot to Handle. I mean yes that was a race I would like to forget don't get me wrong but the distance still counts. And that was a 15k so that was actually longer than my 9 mile run this past Saturday which almost makes this blog pointless. Darn it. But I will continue as if that race never happened in order to keep this blog having some significance.
I have the Dam Half in Lewisville in a couple of weeks and hopefully through my training I will be ready for that. I know that this past Saturday my pace is extremely way off what I use to run. I believe that at the 6.5 point I would have been on pace to finish a half in about 2:40 which would not only be my slowest half ever but by almost 20 to 25 minutes. And to think that my best half time came during the BCS Marathon when I ran the 13.1 in a little under 2 hours. Like 1:59:59 or something like that but hey it still counts as under 2. Of course after those first 13.1 everything went downhill like a chubby kid rolling down a mountain. It was fast and painful and when I eat brownies on the course and wish I had more of them to eat yes you know I had lost my mind at that point. So anyway like an ADD kid I am off the subject and need to get back on subject. It was a fun Saturday for me seeing myself run that far without any back issues. It was great to know that I am getting back being an average runner who wishes he was as fast as Jay. I got a few days off this week and will be running Katy Trail tomorrow for sure during the hot day. Because nothing says running in Texas like running when it is hot outside. But I do love running in the heat. It helps me to lose those few extra pounds that refuse to leave my body.
Off to the State Fair and Katy Trail tomorrow. I still owe my blog the results of my last two Denton tri's. I just keep not wanting to review them but it is coming soon.
